Hello,
This message is about programming the DX7/TX7/TF1 with the Roland
PG1000 hardware programmer and Emagic's Sounddiver 3.x software.
I have always struggled with the following:
1. I find programming my TX816 and TX7's with a hardware
programmer/controller more convenient and faster than manipulating
software knobs and sliders with a mouse.
2. There are no hardware programmers for the Yamaha DX7 (except for
the Jellinghaus, but that is a collector's item).
3. General MIDI hardware programmers/controllers have too little
sliders or knobs (up to 16 or so). You have to use patches, and lose
overview. The great thing about software programmers is the complete
overview of all parameters on your screen.
The Roland PG1000 programmer (made for programming the D50), has 56
sliders, which is enough for the DX7. Through software that
translates any SysEx to any other SysEx I could program the TX's with
the PG1000. This works fine, but it lacks the complete overview on a
screen, that software offers. Therefore I used Jon Morgan's editor
for the overview on screen (by dumping the edited voice to my PC from
time to time, while editing with the PG1000). It is clear that this
is not ideal. A real time link between editing software and the
PG1000 is the solution. Unfortunately no DX7 editing software can be
linked to an external hardware controller.
UNTIL NOW!!! As you probably know, the new release of Sounddiver
(release 3.x) is able to assign any SysEx message to its software
knobs and sliders. It is possible to control Sounddiver's softknobs
and sliders with an external hardware MIDI controller.
I have slaved Sounddiver's sliders to the sliders on the PG1000. For
example, when I move the PG1000 slider for "operator 1 frequency
coarse", the software slider and the readout of its value changes
accordingly in real time.
It is possible to have the parameters of two DX7/TX7/TF1 on a 17"
screen, so I slaved a setup of two TX's in Sounddiver with the
PG1000. This allows me to program two modules simultaniously, which
is very convenient when you use several TX's for programming one
voice. If you have a 21" screen or more than one screen, it is easy
to put four TX's on the screen(s).
This is the best of both worlds: the convenience and productivity of
hardware sliders combined with the complete overview on screen. I
must say, this is very, very convenient. Therefore I wanted to share
this with you.
Linking Sounddiver with the (SysEx) of the PG1000 is time consuming.
Especially calibrating is sometimes a headache. Therefore I made a
template of all controller assignments in Word for other people who
want to try this. You only have to input them in Sounddiver. It'll
save you a lot of time.
I anyone is interested, please let me know and I'll send it to you or
upload it in the file section of this group.
Kind regards,
Jeroen
